EV CHARGING
EV Charging at home
There are many EV Chargers on the market that come in a variety of sizes dependant on your requirements the most common residential unit is between 7 and 8KW and can be bought tethered meaning the charging lead is attached or untethered. Most now are Smart chargers that have a variety of functions for optimal charging they allow you to charge you car with power from the grid, solar generation home energy storage or a mixture of all three. There are packed with features to ensure the most optimal charging in response to you house demand and are fully programmable to make the most of off peak charging. OCCP is now the standard form of communication this allows you to connect to an OCCP compatible platform, which allows you to control and mange your charging experience. This is really designed for an installation of multiple charging points to give greater control over who charged and when.

Here at the Electrical we install a wide range of EV charging units ranging from the small 3kw trickle chargers right up to the super-fast 22KW three phase chargers.
We are accredited with the UK government's office for Zero Emission Vehicles to install EV charge points, you can claim any funding available through us and we will take care of the application process for you.
We have written some guidance to help you make an informed choice as to what best suits your needs. Introducing a car charging point is a significant load on your existing installation and below are a few of the common challenges we face when installing them.
We will carry out a free site survey for you with no obligation to establish the best option for your individual needs so call or email us today.

Main Cutout Fuse:
Firstly, we will need to have a look at the characteristics of your current installation and in particular the size of the Main Cutout Fuse. This is usually positioned right next to the Electrical meter and either 80 amp or 100 amp. The introduction of an EV Car charging point is a fairly substantial load to introduce to household consumption and depending on the demand that is currently placed on your services it may be necessary to upgrade an 80-amp fuse to a 100-amp fuse this may not be the case but if it is then we can work with your local DNO "Distribution Network Operator" to identify if you are able to have a larger cutout fuse and in most cases this a straight swap one for another, but if you are on a looped service then we will liaise with your DNO on your behalf.
MPAN Number:
Your ''MPAN'' number or Meter Point Administration Number will help us identify your property and enable us to gather all the information we require from the DNO with regards to your Electrical supply characteristics this can be found at the top of any energy bill or online portal.
Gas and Water Bonding:
This will usually be a straightforward visual check to make sure you have the correct size bonding currently in situ. If you haven't then we can manage this this during the installation of your EV car charging point.
Is there Space in your consumer unit:
The addition of a car charging point will require you to have a ''Spare way'' in your consumer if you don't then we can install a smaller one next to your existing one solely for the purpose of supplying the car charging point..
Cable run from the consumer unit.
Hopefully in a perfect world your consumer unit will be positioned right behind the location you wish to have the car charging point installed but that is wishful thinking and very few are so having an idea of where you would like the cable to run if indeed it does need to be surface clipped to the exterior of the building will help us during the site survey.
Where would you like the Charging point to be located.
Depending on where the charging point is located on your car and where you like to park will dictate where we install the charging point, we would generally advise you install a tethered cable charging point this means the cable is permanently attached to the charging point so when you return home it's just a case of unravelling the cable and connecting it to your car.
